Business networking tip #11 ? Ask people their story

Asking people their story is a business networking tipWhen doing my workshops I normally start off by asking people to get together in small groups and share with each other how they came to be working at their company or how they came to start their business. Everyone is relaxed and enjoys the process.

One of the easiest ways I have found of developing rapport with someone when business networking (or indeed any other time) is to ask them their story. People love to tell stories ? it?s what friends do when they catch up with each other.

Ask them how they came to start their business or how they came to be in their current job. I normally tag something at the end of the question like ?So what?s the story?..? and have never had anyone look at me strangely and say ?come on Richard ? we are adults!?

I am convinced we are genetically engineered for telling stories ? it just comes naturally to us. Even the most hard crusted executive will delight in telling their story. I guarantee they rarely get the opportunity.

Provided you are interested in listening to their story then you will find any ice melting away like a snow flake in the sahara!.
