Scientists reveal genetic mutation depicted in van Gogh's sunflower paintings

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? In addition to being among his most vibrant and celebrated works, Vincent van Gogh's series of sunflower paintings also depict a mutation whose genetic basis has, until now, been a bit of a mystery.

In a study published March 29 in the journal PLoS Genetics, however, a team of University of Georgia scientists reveals the mutation behind the distinctive, thick bands of yellow "double flowers" that the post-Impressionist artist painted more than 100 years ago.

"In addition to being of interest from a historical perspective, this finding gives us insight into the molecular basis of an economically important trait," said senior author John Burke, professor of plant biology in the UGA Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. "You often see ornamental varieties similar to the ones van Gogh painted growing in people's gardens or used for cut flowers, and there is a major market for them."

The most common sunflower phenotype is a composite flower head that contains a single whorl of large, flattened, yellow ray florets on the outer perimeter and hundreds to over a thousand individual, tubular, disc florets that can produce seeds. The double-flowered mutants that van Gogh depicted in many of his paintings, on the other hand, have multiple bands of yellow florets and a much smaller proportion of internal disc florets.

To understand the genetic basis of this difference, Burke and his colleagues began by using the same plant crossing techniques that Gregor Mendel, a 19th century contemporary of van Gogh, used to lay the foundation of modern genetics. The scientists crossed the common, or wild type, variety of sunflower with the double-flowered variety. Their initial findings suggested that a single, dominant gene was responsible for creating the double-flowered mutation. Subsequent crosses of the offspring revealed that a second mutation, which is recessive to both the double-flowered mutation and the wild-type version of the gene, results in a third flower type that is intermediate in form -- being elongated and yellow -- but tubular and containing the reproductive structures of the interior florets.

The scientists identified the responsible gene and sequenced it to show that in the double-flowered mutation, the portion of the gene that functions as an on/off switch is disrupted so that the instructions for making the outer rays are turned on in the portions of the plant that would normally produce the internal disc florets. In the second mutation, which results in the tubular florets, the insertion of a "jumping gene" disrupts the ability of the plant to produce normal ray florets. As a result, tubular florets are produced in place of the normal ray florets.

Finally, the scientists screened hundreds of sunflower varieties -- wild type, double-flowered and tubular -- and found that wild-type sunflower varieties never have a mutation in the HaCYC2c gene, while the double-flowered varieties always have the same mutation in the on/off switch. In addition, the tubular varieties always have a disrupted copy of the gene.

"All of this evidence tells us that the mutation we've identified is the same one that van Gogh captured in the 1800s," Burke said.

You can find many sorts of surgical treatment that may perhaps be carried out depending on the colorectal cancer malignancy level. Very early colon cancer malignancy may perhaps be treated by means of local excision where the cancer is slowly removed with out the need of striking the abdominal walls. Rather, a tube is inserted via butt and after that utilized to cut out the elements of colon that happen to be impacted by the cancer. In slightly advanced colorectal cancer, resection might be done whereby the components of the colorectal which are impacted are eliminated and then the normal healthy areas attached together.

Verizon's CEO has a plan for wireless pay-TV, if the government will allow it

Verizon CEO Lowell C. McAdam doesn't quite have all of those SpectrumCo AWS licenses in his pocket just yet, but if he does get them he has a decidedly old school idea of what to flood the airwaves with: TV. The Wall Street Journal quotes him saying Verizon and its new cable friends could have "the beginnings of an integrated offering" out by the holidays, so pay-TV customers could watch video on their mobile devices. Even though many of the TV services are already streaming video to tablets, PCs and phones, currently most subscription services are limited to the space of the home's WiFi network, unlike the video on-demand seen above. According to McAdam the potential to negotiate rights for outside the home streaming and even busting open the bundles for à la carte programming exist -- provided the FCC and DOJ allow Verizon to complete the proposed $3.9 billion purchase. Of course, consumption based billing would still be on the table, so don't start planning your streaming schedule just yet. For now we'll wait and see if the pros of this arrangement outweigh the cons (and how its Redbox play is mixed up in this), or if the pie-in-the-sky NowTV-style elements of the plan are merely being floated to get the deal done.

Issues You May Face Having An Accident With A Financed Car ...

We would all probably choose to pay for our car with cash but for most people that just isn?t an option. Sometimes we need to get car finance to buy our car and there a number of car finance packages available. These include deals from the showroom where we buy the car, a loan from the high street bank, a special car loan from a specialised company and so on. Whatever the car credit you choose always make sure you do your research first to make sure that you get the best possible rate.

Car insurance might not cover all costs

So lets imagine you have brought a new car from a car dealership with a car loan. You have had your car for around a year when you are involved in an accident and your car is written off. The accident was your fault, so you may be surprised to find that the car insurance you have is not enough to cover the whole cost of the car finance. A lot of people mistakenly assume that their comprehensive insurance package will cover the entire cost of the car, but it?doesn't?include the cost of the finance. This is a very tricky situation and would leave you in a difficult position. Not only have you had your car written off, the insurance company won?t pay for what you owe on the car finance. If you?aren't?able to make up the shortfall then you could be sued by the car credit company and this will seriously damage your credit score.

Gap insurance or PPI

There are ways though that you can avoid this situation. Gap insurance is available for people who might find themselves with this scenario. This will cover the difference between what your car is physically worth to the insurance company and the amount outstanding on the car loan. This insurance isn?t widely advertised but can be a godsend for people who buy cars with car finance and then either get their car stolen or written off. It means that you won?t find yourself out of pocket as the Gap insurance you took out will cover all your financial losses. Another way you can try to protect yourself is to get PPI, payment protection insurance. This will cover you if you are unable to work due to the accident and so are unable to pay your car loan.

Getting car finance is a good idea to enable you to buy the car you really want but you should always be aware of the pitfalls including what happens if you have an accident in a car you are buying on finance. As explained however, even in this case there are ways to avoid losing out financially.

Specialist Lighting Solutions | Home Improvement Project

Lighting at Home are a specialist lighting retailer suppliers lights that will perfectly compliment the decor of any room in your home. Few design changes can make such an immediate and drastic difference to the functionality and appearance of a room as lighting fixtures. Rooms such as kitchens and baths that require bright, focused lighting for optimal usefulness can benefit particularly well from carefully chosen, carefully placed fixtures that create ambient light, area light and accent light. Understanding the difference between these three types of light is critical when attempting to properly light a given room.

lighting at homeSpecialist kitchen lighting products allow for added control over the light source in the kitchen work space. For example, pendant lights over an island or bar allow for bright and focused lighting in the area being used without illuminating the entire room. Accent or task lighting over features such as sinks and stoves also allow for increased visibility while those areas are in use. Meanwhile, overhead lighting creates warm, diffuse lighting throughout the entire room. Each of these fixtures can be turned on or off as necessary, creating a custom lighting plan for the room that can be altered as necessary for the best results.

Bathroom light fittings are available in a number of styles and designs as well. Task lighting can be crucial around mirrors and sinks in order to facilitate easier grooming, while area lighting around tubs or showers can provide illumination during bathing without resorting to harsh, overly bright overhead lighting. In effect, installing specialty light fixtures providing a variety of types of light allows for flexibility in lighting the space in use in the way that will be most beneficial for the task at hand.

Gymnastics - The Epitome of Sport

Gymnastics is one of the most popular Olympic sports which encompasses the three disciplines of Artistic, Rhythmic and Trampoline. These three disciplines are broken down further so within the 'artistic' set is the vault, floor exercise, the horse, still rings, parallel bars, high bar, uneven bars and? the balance beam. In the vault event, a small trampoline called a trampet is also used in order to give the gymnast more lift. Both men and women compete in the vault and floor exercise events, but only men compete in the horse, still rings, parallel bars and the high bars, and only the women compete in the uneven bars and balance beam events.

?

The rhythmic disciplines involve far less apparatus than the artistic gymnastics do. In rhythmic gymnastics the rope, club (or baton), hoop, ball and ribbon are the only apparatus used.

There is also a 'free' or floor routine which involves no apparatus. Rhythmic gymnastics is traditionally a women?s only discipline, however recently more and more men are competing in this discipline.

?

The third and final discipline of gymnastics is done on trampolines. In this discipline the gymnasts perform aerobics whilst bouncing on a trampoline. There is the individual event where gymnasts compete on their own. The synchronised event where a pair of gymnasts perform on two trampolines whilst doing the same routine in sync with their partner. Tumbling involves a small trampet where the gymnasts will perform highly complex routines within a single jump from the trampet before landing on a mat.

Seeing as trampolines in their modern form were only invented in the 1930's, this is by far the most recent discipline in the sport of gymnastics, whereas the artistic and rhythmic disciplines hail from the original Olympics of ancient Greece.

?

Former events with the spectrum of gymnastics which are no longer part of the Olympics or Commonwealth Games are the rope climb, where the competitor had to climb a length of rope using only their arms and were judged on both speed and style. Another event which is no longer practised is the flying rings. Similar to the still rings so far as the routines and aerobics are concerned, however on the flying rings, the competitor must be swinging rather than stationary.

?

Gymnastics, regardless of the discipline or event in question is going to be one of the most highly attended events at the upcoming London 2012 Olympic games this summer. The sport's popularity is not surprising as it is visually spectacular and the agility and strength of the participating athletes is nothing short of mind boggling. These athletes really are amongst the most dedicated and disciplined athletes in the whole spectrum of events.

Breast Cancer Politics: Does Komen Finally Deserve Forgiveness ...

From Frugivore ??Five high-ranking executives of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer foundation have resigned from their positions since the aftermath of the organization?s decision to eliminate its funding for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), which it later reversed and restored. Komen spokesperson Leslie Aun shared the following in response to inquiries about the resignations.

?Obviously, we know some folks are upset. We?ve certainly seen that,? Aun stated. ?We know people have been upset by the recent events, but most really do recognize the importance of our work.?

Indeed, Komen has invested more than 1.9 billion in breast cancer research and activism. It?s currently the largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, working together to save lives, empower people, fight for quality healthcare, and support scientists pursuing breast cancer cures.

Point blank, Komen has been there for countless women, many of who were shocked to hear it would even consider defunding Planned Parenthood. But nonetheless, a controversial and unpopular decision doesn?t take away the fact that Komen has empowered and assisted women and families all over the world battling breast cancer. And for that reason alone, perhaps we should consider the path of forgiveness.

Inside the Mummification of Space Shuttle Discovery

Assuming the planned number of SLS launches uses up all of the available SSMEs then it is no real hardship to restart the production lines and make more of them as needed. They are not much more complex to build than any other fully-cryogenic motor currently constructed by various manufacturers especially with fifty years of experience since the first crude LOX/LH2 engines were built and flown.

Other than the fact that the assembly line which built these engines has been shut down for nearly three decades and many of the people who not just built the engines but also were involved with the engineering teams that designed them not only are retired but are pushing up daisies due to old age.... yeah, you might get that assembly line going again. It isn't going to get going again any time soon.

And "any other fully-cryogenic motor" won't fit the bill either. For engines of this size and magnitude, there hasn't been a new rocket motor built even designed for several decades besides the Merlin engines by SpaceX. Companies like Orbital and Lockheed-Martin are even using Russian engines because they don't have the engineers in-house to make them, It is a sad state of American aerospace engineering I'll admit, but the problem is that nobody is doing stuff like that because somebody somewhere thought that we had all of the missiles and rocket engines we would ever need for eternity. Commercial sales of American launchers is so pathetic that it might as well be non-existent as most non-government space launches have been done by either Russia, the ESA, or China (with India getting ready to enter the mix).

There is some hope for the future as there are dozens of much smaller engines (but still capable in theory of orbital spaceflight) that are under development in America, but nothing of the class or scale that would launch the SLS. I just don't see NASA willing to fly a rocket like the N1 that had over 40 rocket engines... which would again require a whole new rocket design.

BTW, as far as SpaceX and the "off the shelf components".... Elon Musk got so disgusted with the supply chain he could find that he brought most of the part production in-house and even purchased several sub-contractors outright and had them move their production facilities to El Segundo to be inside the plant or right next to it. My point is that the replacement of the SLS engine (aka replacing the SSMEs once they've all been used up) is going to need the same sort of effort... an effort that still has yet to be funded by the U.S. Congress no less. So we are talking about a hypothetical rocket engine that has yet to even receive funding much less have any engineers even be devoted to getting it built.

Perhaps instead they will simply purchase Merlin 2 engines for the SLS?

Regardless, I think it is a total waste of a valuable resource to throw away the SSMEs in such a fashion as is currently programmed to happen. This is the "official" path that NASA is taking for the manned spaceflight program, and the one thing that is being used to sacrifice nearly the rest of NASA's budget including deep space missions. The use of the SSMEs is done to "save money", but I fail to see how in the long term (aka 10-20 years) that is going to happen either. It will save over the short term (aka about 2-3 years) some money, but not much.

Salem Communications buys Metro Detroit FM translator

Salem Communications' Pennsylvania Media Associates has agreed to purchase FM translator W248AQ 97.5 Harrison Township from Martz Communications' Radio Power for $250,000 pending FCC approval and closing. This translator, which has a construction permit to move to FM 92.7 as W224CC where it would serve much of southern Macomb County from an antenna located in Roseville, was recently acquired by Martz from Radio Assist Ministry.

The sale application shows that Salem plans to use the translator to rebroadcast its news/talk WDTK AM 1400.

Martz purchased agreed purchase this particular translator for $32,000 in November, 2011 and closed on the acquisition earlier this month. Martz never used it as part of the short-lived attempt to use two other area translators to rebroadcast digital subchannels of WGPR-FM. Those two offerings (104.7 The Oasis and 94.3 The Bone) folded earlier this year and the two associated translators have remained silent.

AppFirst Unveils New Initiatives to Deliver Business and IT ...

Business and System Risk Management Solutions Bring IT to the Executive Roundtable

NEW YORK, NY ? March 26, 2012 ? Responding to the growing need for CIOs to deliver a customer-obsessed technology model, AppFirst, provider of critical business and system visibility solutions, today announced three new initiatives to support an organizations? move to completely align business and IT goals. The new programs are built upon AppFirst?s platform and solutions, which enable IT to integrate business performance and system metrics into a single repository. With that capability, organizations are impacted in powerful ways: by sharing insights about customers, engaging the organization to innovate at the most grassroots level, executing to bring that innovation to market; and resolving issues before their customers even know there is a problem.

The three new initiatives support the progression from a survival mode model where the business is just reacting to users complaining about systems, to a completely aligned organization where business and IT work hand-in-hand to manage those risks.
?Today it?s no longer good enough to be customer-focused ? to survive, let alone be successful, you must be customer-obsessed,? said David Roth, AppFirst CEO. ?IT is the solution to becoming obsessed, AppFirst completely dismisses the notion that IT will soon just disappear. IT sits at the nexus between customers and the business, making it the ideal conduit to communicate customer needs. AppFirst is delivering the solutions that will elevate IT to the strategic business model of other C-level executives, allowing organizations to make business and IT goals one and the same.?

IT is ideally positioned in the enterprise to drive and impact that customer obsession, and as the nexus point between customer and the services they consume, IT has focused and unique knowledge to lead the organization. As the role of the CIO evolves from simply managing assets to directly driving business innovation, organizations can utilize their unique visibility by sharing insight about customers with the rest of the organization, engaging the organization to innovate at a grassroots level, and executing on plans to bring that innovation to market.

In order to support this transition to true alignment, technology executives must have access to the business and system metrics that live within applications to provide critical business visibility through technical operations. AppFirst delivers the platform and solutions needed to be able to use those metrics to drive business.

?In today?s competitive market, companies must have clear insight into their own operations in order to make critical decisions about growth, pushing their systems while ensuring their customers? satisfaction are still top priority,? said Christian Berczely, vice president of engineering for Intelligize, and AppFirst customer. ?We were well aware we needed a higher level of visibility into our systems, but the thought of building and maintaining such a system was daunting, and costly. AppFirst?s solutions delivered exactly what we needed and I?m thrilled that my engineers can continue to focus on delivering features to our end users instead of building and maintaining a service like this. Today, we have clear visibility into our systems and applications and exactly how our customers are using them.?

?In the age of the customer, it?s more important than ever for enterprises to innovate to differentiate? I&O can be that spark that ignites innovation,? writes Jean Pierre Garbani, vice president and principal analyst for Forrester Research, Inc. in his October 4, 2011 report entitled Transform Your I&O Organization Into An Innovation Machine?. ?Only in organizations that have a partner player relationship ? where technology and its leaders are viewed as a critical to go-to-market offerings and provide a source of differentiation ? will you be able to deliver unique and competitive solutions.?

AppFirst?s new initiatives support the steps required to build a true partner player relationship by delivering the platform and technology to allow a business to move from an organization devoid of any operations risk management to a model of complete alignment of business and IT operations.

AppFirst?s new initiatives deliver a complete package of solutions targeting people, process and technology that allow businesses to move along the path to a partner player model without incurring huge expenses. The three options, providing solutions to move from planning to alignment, include:
? Jumpstart ? Allow first time users of AppFirst to get up and running quickly in a planning mode to allow IT to be focused on managing system risks. The package implements a single view of operational risks and rapid root cause analysis, and AppFirst experts are even able to manage the initial set up for organizations short on time.
? System Risk Management Solution ? Following AppFirst?s continued commitment to DevOps teams, the System Risk Management solution delivers tools that provide a 360 degree view of risks and use baselines, enabling execution of any technical action from a common set of data. This allows companies to be alerted to, and prevent failures, and allows IT to evangelize prevention over recovery.
? Business Risk Management Solution ? The third package moves organizations to a truly aligned state where IT is the go-to source for business risk management by delivering technology that enables business performance metrics to be integrated into the risk framework.

ASUS teases 'awesome new features' for Transformer Prime, doesn't say what they are

Like that one friend who cares enough to update everyone about a "killer party" they're headed to without saying where it is, the official ASUS Facebook page has dropped a teaser that is as tantalizing as it is frustratingly vague. The note promises "awesome new features" in the next update for its Transformer Prime, but has absolutely no details on what that means. So what could be in store, some minor .01 revision ICS bump, further GPS tweaks, custom ASUS apps or some celebratory Hasbro wallpapers? Of course, we'd love to hear that everyone's getting a new higher-res display swapped into their Tegra 3 tablet, but even with lasers and time travel still on the table, we're thinking that's not it. Feel free to dream big in the comments below -- for the moment, anything is possible.

Pope heads to Cuba to shore up Catholic Church

Pope Benedict XVI heads Monday to multi-denominational Cuba, where the Catholic Church has minority status but maintains a special dialogue with the communist regime, in the absence of legal opposition.

Benedict XVI, who made his first visit to Mexico at the weekend, set the tone for the Cuba trip by insisting Marxism "as it was designed, no longer corresponds to reality," and it would be useful to "find new models" of governing.

He said Friday that Catholics were ready "to help in a constructive dialogue necessary to avoid trauma."

But the pontiff added that it was "obvious that the church is always on the side of freedom of conscience, freedom of religion" and that in Cuba, "ordinary Catholics contribute to finding the path forward."

However, nobody expects a clash between the pontiff and the Cuban government, even as it continues a government crackdown on its opponents.

At least 70 dissidents have been arrested by Cuban authorities in an effort to stop a demonstration during Benedict XVI's visit, opposition sources said.

At least 15 of those detained are reported to be members of the Ladies in White, a prominent group of wives and family members of jailed political opponents.

The Cuban Human Rights and National Reconciliation Commission, a dissident group, said the arrests took place in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba, where the pope was due to arrive Monday.

Benedict XVI underscored his commitment to "absolute continuity" of the course laid out by the historic journey of Pope John Paul II on the island in January 1998.

"The Holy See knows the ideological positions of the Cuban government" and the government "is aware of the views of the Church," said Archbishop Dionisio Garcia of Santiago de Cuba.

He said he did not believe the comments made by the pope would have repercussions on the visit.

"The pope said something that is obvious," the archbishop said. "Marxism, as it was designed, should be overstepped and revised, and not only in Cuba."

Benedict XVI has no plans to meet with members of the Cuban opposition. The pope "knows the Cuban reality" and the fact "he meets with the opponents or not does not mean he is unaware" of their situation, Garcia said Saturday.

However, the Vatican said the pope would be "available" for a possible meeting with the father of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, who left power due to ill health in 2006.

Cuba's Roman Catholics account for about 10 percent of the population of 11 million, after 40 years of official atheism ended in the 1990s. Evangelical Protestants are making inroads here as elsewhere, but most Cubans identify most with AfroCuban belief systems, such as Santeria and Palo Monte.

Workers, racing against the clock, have pieced together the huge altar where Pope Benedict is to say mass later this week in sprawling Revolution Square. It has been the venue for countless mass rallies over almost five decades by the Communist government led until 2006 by Fidel Castro.

The altar was placed at the foot of the towering Jose Marti monument, which honors Cuba's most important independence-era hero.

Among the popular preparations -- workers paved the heavily used Rancho Boyeros Avenue that leads to Jose Marti International Airport, and other streets on which the bullet-proof, pearly white Popemobile will roll by.

But in contrast to John Paul II's visit, Havana has not been supplied with much in the way of commemorative trinkets like T-shirts, pens or busts of the pontiff.

On Sunday in Mexico, Benedict XVI sought to boost the Catholic faith in the face of violence and other challenges.

"There is no reason... to give in to the despotism of evil. Let us instead ask the risen Lord to manifest his power," he said before Latin American bishops in the cathedral of Leon.

At a vast open-air mass, the pope also referred to Christ the King, whose statue, also a major Mexican icon, towered over Bicentennial Park where the event took place.

"His kingdom does not stand on the power of his armies subduing others through force or violence. It rests on a higher power than wins over hearts: the love of God," the pope said before an estimated crowd of more than half a million gathered in the blazing sun in the highly Catholic state of Guanajuato.

The mass was a highlight on the 84-year-old pope's last day in Mexico, on a visit which began in the shadow of his charismatic predecessor John Paul II, who made the trip five times, but ended up drawing a swell of popular support.

(AP) ? On a dusty, rock-strewn expanse at the edge of the Mojave Desert, a company linked to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wants to build a bullet train that would rocket tourists from the middle of nowhere to the gambling palaces of Las Vegas.

Privately held DesertXpress is on the verge of landing a $4.9 billion loan from the Obama administration to build the 150 mph train, which could be a lifeline for a region devastated by the housing crash or a crap shoot for taxpayers weary of Washington spending.

The vast park-and-ride project hinges on the untested idea that car-loving Californians will drive about 100 miles from the Los Angeles area, pull off busy Interstate 15 and board a train for the final leg to the famous Strip.

Planners imagine that millions of travelers a year will one day flock to a station outside down-on-its-luck Victorville, a small city where shuttered storefronts pock the historic downtown.

An alliance of business and political rainmakers from The Strip to Capitol Hill is backing the project that could become the first high-speed system to break ground under President Barack Obama's push to modernize the U.S. rail network ? and give the Democratic president's re-election prospects a lift in battleground Nevada.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has publicly blessed the train ? it means jobs, he says ? and it's cleared several regulatory hurdles in Washington.

Yet even as the Federal Railroad Administration considers awarding what would be, by far, the largest loan of its type, its own research warns it's difficult to predict how many people will ride the train, a critical measure of financial survival, an Associated Press review found.

There are other skeptics, as well.

"It's insanity," says Thomas Finkbiner of the Intermodal Transportation Institute at the University of Denver. "People won't drive to a train to go someplace. If you are going to drive, why not drive all the way and leave when you want?"

Construction cost projections have soared to as much as $6.5 billion, not including interest on the loan. Some fear taxpayer subsidies are inevitable.

Reid and other supporters point to research that shows 80,000 new jobs, but FRA documents show virtually all those would be temporary ? no more than 722 would be permanent.

Victorville Mayor Ryan McEachron envisions a bustling transportation oasis with a hotel, restaurants, maybe even homes, on the proposed station site. He believes drivers can be enticed out of their cars, even in a region where the notion of rail travel can seem as distant as a New York subway.

The company is "going to have to market and market hard in order to get the ridership they need to support paying back the loan," the mayor says. "I think you can change the thinking."

Along with Reid, the president's most influential Democratic ally in Congress, the plan is being advanced by casino developer and contractor Anthony Marnell II, whose credits include building the Bellagio and Wynn Las Vegas and who heads Marnell Companies, the majority shareholder in DesertXpress; project consultant Sig Rogich, a Republican adviser to two presidential campaigns who founded Nevada's most influential lobbying and advertising company; and Canadian transportation giant Bombardier, a DesertXpress strategic adviser that wants to supply its rail cars.

A decision on the loan is not expected until mid-year, but the company has spent some $30 million sharpening its plan and refining ridership projections. Rising gas prices and increasing traffic congestion could help ticket sales, and the company is touting reduced air pollution from fewer cars on the road.

"It's Victorville that makes the project work," says chief executive Andrew Mack.

Far from being a train from nowhere, company planners see the struggling city of 115,000, once a stop on storied Route 66, as a collection point for millions of drivers heading north to Las Vegas. Bringing the line deeper into the populous Los Angeles area would raise formidable challenges, Mack said, from crossing numerous freeways to finding space for track.

The lot now stippled with spindly creosote bushes has room for 15,000 parking spaces. Bags would be checked through to hotel rooms. At peak hours, trains would depart every 20 minutes. Mack says an average round-trip fare could be as low as $75, though documents estimate $100.

Mack says the train will deliver convenience ? and for a price, luxury ? that studies show passengers want.

DesertXpress officials once boasted they would build the line with private dollars, but they now plan to rely on FRA financing to cover the bulk of the cost. Mack didn't directly answer if the company turned to the FRA because private investors were unwilling to take the risk, but said the loan terms are attractive.

"When somebody comes and tells me I will build a system that pays for itself, I'm suspicious," said Hasan Ikhrata, executive director of the Southern California Association of Governments, which questioned ridership potential in a report last year. "There is no high-speed rail system in the world that operates without subsidies."

The company is still arranging as much as $1.6 billion needed to cover its share of the construction bill for the roughly 200-mile line. Investments could hinge on the loan approval, which requires the company to convince the FRA that taxpayers won't get stiffed. In a worst-case scenario, the train would become government property if the company fails.

The low-interest loan would be about three times the combined amount the FRA loaned 32 other projects through the Railroad Rehabilitation & Improvement Financing program since its inception in 2002.

If successful, the train could be a forerunner in a national high-speed rail network, while bringing a rich return for investors and delivering visitors to Vegas. It would also give Nevada residents an option to Southern California, albeit many miles from tourist hotspots like Hollywood or the beaches.

The company is seeking funds at a time when a proposed high-speed train running from San Francisco to Southern California has been questioned because of ballooning costs and fear it will sap taxpayer dollars.

Early company research projected the train would lure away nearly one in four car, bus and airline travelers, initially about 4 million people annually. The company now pegs first-year ridership at about 3 million, but that projection was trimmed to 2.5 million by government analysts who urged more study.

The risks are summarized in a 2007 study commissioned by ACS Infrastructure North America, a division of a global construction company that DesertXpress says is seeking a role in the project, that found most travelers were "broadly happy" going to Las Vegas by car or airline. While most travelers would be open to riding a train, the report warned the company would need to lure riders with pampering.

On clear roads, the 270-mile drive from downtown Los Angeles to Las Vegas takes about four hours. Planners say the train ride from Victorville to Las Vegas would take about 80 minutes, but it's debatable how much time would be saved after parking, boarding the train and reaching a Las Vegas hotel.

Round-trip flights from Los Angeles to Las Vegas can be booked for under $100.

The dream of uniting Southern California and Las Vegas by high-speed rail has been discussed for decades. In the mid-1980s, Las Vegas officials predicted a line would be running by 2000. DesertXpress, which would roughly parallel Interstate-15 on a pair of new tracks, has predicted for several years that it would soon break ground.

Reid initially backed a rival project that planned to use magnetic power to reach Orange County, but he jumped trains shortly after Rogich became co-chair of Republicans for Reid, a Nevada group with ties to the gambling industry that helped Reid win re-election in 2010.

The senator's office disputes any connection between his flip and Rogich's involvement in the campaign. Spokeswoman Kristen Orthman says Reid's decision was based on the viability of DesertXpress, while the magnetically powered project languished.

Marnell, another member of Republicans for Reid, is president of one of several companies under the DesertXpress corporate banner. He and his son, M Resort, Spa and Casino President Anthony Marnell III, are also investors.

Federal records show the elder Marnell has donated at least $15,000 to political committees connected to Reid since 2010, including a $5,000 donation in May to the senator's Searchlight Leadership Fund.

According to federal records, the company has spent at least $270,000 since 2006 lobbying at the House, Senate and federal offices.

Other investors include North Dakota businessman Gary Tharaldson, who donated $10,000 to a Reid committee in March, and transportation expert Tom Stone, who organized DesertXpress with partner Mack in 2005.

Nevada records show DesertXpress HRS Corp., headed by the elder Marnell with his son as a director, was authorized to issue 25,000 shares of stock. DesertXpress declined to say who held those shares, if issued, and in what amounts.

Not everyone in the high desert is on board with the project.

Thirty miles northeast of Victorville on I-15, officials in Barstow fear they'll lose 2,300 jobs. The impact will be "unsustainable," Mayor Joe Gomez wrote to LaHood in October 2010, according to a letter released under a public records request.

To appease those concerns, McEachron said the station's proposed location was moved about halfway to Barstow. The patch of vacant land is so remote the city would have to annex it.
