I have been out of the loop for quite a while, but I am back with a possible idea that I think is worth getting off the ground and is different enough to have a chance at success.

The title obviously refers to super powers (not much different about that you might say), but it comes out of a frustration of failures in this genre. Let me explain then I will tell you my idea.

First, RP's on this subject matter seem to always fail. Is it because of the same reasons that most RP's fail to reach a conclusion? Likely, but I think it also fails for the same reasons tv shows do. I was only slightly frustrated when I found out No Ordinary Family was cancelled. They had already ruined it by letting the mom run faster than time in the first season. So while I was sad to see it go, I was glad they couldn't ruin it any further. I wish there was a good supers tv show, but they all do the same thing: ratchet the powers up more and more until one or more of the characters can alter the fabric of reality and the threat grows to cover all of existence. DRAMA!

Fortunately what doesnt work on TV, works in forum RPs (at least this is my suspicion/hope).

The idea I have in mind is a supers RP but with a heavy dose of realism. The title of the RP is supposed to be sarcasm, as in "Jimmy's in trouble! You can save him!" "Super! I'll get right on that after I finish my coffee." Its not an anti-hero show (yes, I said show), but more of one that deals with people as they deal with their situation of having powers. I dont have a main driving plot yet, but thats ok really. Because I think two factors of this RP can keep it from dying off:
1) It will be structured as a show - That means the RP will be "Super!" but the first IC RP will be "season 1" (whatever name that season has". Each "season" will be designed to run as a separate story arc that is generally connected to the whole. This will give alot of freedom for players to drop in and out at the the beginning and ending of a season, respectively. While it would require players to commit to staying active for an entire season, the season RP's themselves should not be that long in terms of the time it takes to reach a climax. Ideally, the length of a season will be determined by the cast, with trumping votes going to recurring cast (of which I will be the first).

2) The whole "power up" problem disappears in reality - A typical heroes show has them fighting bigger and badder enemies until the world is about to blow up. But then what? Let me tell you. When Superman comes and rescues us from the grand poo bah of evil who threatened to enslave the entire planet, it wont change anything. The day after we are saved, somebody will be robbing a liquor store, or planning to murder their ex-wives new boyfriend, or something. In short, the world will always need to be saved. Because this is a series of Forum RP's, it doesnt have to generate ratings or positive reviews, and therefore has no requirement to ratchet up the intensity each season to "keep viewers watching". We could literally fight off this grand poo bah of evil in the first season, and then spend the rest of the seasons just fighting regular crime in a city. It only ends when people get tired of playing, and since new characters can drop in each season, it should be able to remain fresh.

I already have the idea for my character in mind, and, in similar fasion as him as well as other RP's in this genre I have attempted before, I would like powers to be at least a tiny bit explainable in some way (i.e. being able to summon a 10ton brick from thin air to drop on heads of enemies would be an example of unexplainable). But at this point I would like to get a group of 2-5 people committed to starting up the first season and seeing it through.

I know that once the first season of this RP is finished, it will be massively easier to keep it going compared to what it will take to get it started. And I would even be willing to do a shortened RP as if it were a pilot episode just to get the rhythm going if need be.

If you are interested, dont just post a two word sentence (as those kind of IC postings will be frowned upon anyway), but sound off with your interest, questions, and ideas. As soon as the first team can be put together this thing will launch.

You're rudely awakened by the phone. Your room is pitch black. It's unsettling, because you're a little uncertain about where you are ? and then you remember. You're in a hotel room.

Sound like a familiar experience? Or maybe you've felt a similar kind of disorientation when you walk out of an elevator onto the wrong floor? But what actually happens inside your head when you experience moments like these?

In an article published in this week's edition of the journal Nature, researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology's Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience describe exactly how the brain reacts in situations like these, during the transition between one memory and the next. The study employed a method that allowed them to make measurements right down to the millisecond level. The research was conducted in the laboratory of May-Britt and Edvard Moser, co-director and director respectively of NTNU's Kavli Institute, by first author Karel Jezek.

Their findings show that memory is divided into discrete individual packets, analogous to the way that light is divvied up into individual bits called quanta. Each memory is just 125 milliseconds long ? which means the brain can swap between different memories as often as eight times in one second.

"The brain won't let itself get confused," says Professor May-Britt Moser. "It never mixes different places and memories together, even though you might perceive it that way. This is because the processes taking place inside your head when your brain is looking for a map of where you are take place so fast that you don't notice that you are actually switching between different maps. When you feel a little confused, it is because there is a competition in your brain between two memories. Or maybe more than two."

Brain researchers Edvard and May-Britt Moser are trying to understand exactly how the brain works. Their approach is to meticulously monitor electrical activity in different parts of the rat brain, while the rats explore different mazes. It's a painstaking approach that provides them ever more pieces to the puzzle that is the workings of the brain.

To explore the question of whether the brain mixes memories together, the researchers created a special box for their laboratory animals that effectively enabled them to instantaneously 'teleport' a rat from one place to another -- without the help of the Starship Enterprise. Then, they tested how the brain handled the memory of place when the experience of that place suddenly changed from one location to another.

"We tricked the rats," May-Britt Moser explains. "They're not really teleported of course, but we have an approach that makes them believe that they have been. The features of the box, which give the rats a sense of where they are, are actually 'constructed' out of different lighting schemes. So we can switch from one group of location characteristics to another with the flick of a light switch."

The rats were trained over a long time to believe that the various lighting schemes represented different rooms. The researchers can tell that the rats truly believe that they are in different places because of their brain activity. "Once we turn on one lighting scheme, we can read a very specific pattern of activity in the cells in the part of the rat's brain that creates maps," May Britt Moser says. "And when we switch to the other lighting scheme, the map pattern in the brain is completely different."

When the researchers 'teleport' the rats from one place to another by flipping the light switch from A to B, the rats experience exactly the kind of confusion you feel when you momentarily don't know where you are. "But the mind doesn't actually mix up the maps," she says. "It switches back and forth between the two maps that represent rooms A and B, but it is never in an intermediate position. The brain can 'flip' back and forth between the two different maps, but it is always either or, site A or site B."

May-Britt and Edvard Moser have previously discovered the location of the brain's sense of place, shown how the brain works to make memories distinctively different, and have found that the brain has a mechanism to switch between experiences through the use of senses and images stored as memories. Now the researchers have also shown how the brain switches between individual memories, and how long the brain lingers on the different bits of memory.

"We are beginning to get a glimpse of the contours of the mechanisms that make up the world of our thoughts," says May-Britt Moser.

After 3 years, Boeing Dreamliner becomes reality (Reuters)

SEATTLE (Reuters) ? Boeing's long-awaited dream machine became a commercial reality on Sunday when the lightweight plastic-composites 787 Dreamliner was formally delivered to its first Japanese customer.

Boeing says the revolutionary carbon fiber design will hand 20 percent fuel savings to airlines struggling to avoid a new recession, and give passengers a more comfortable ride with better cabin air and large electronically dimmable windows.

The first $200 million aircraft was handed over to Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways three years behind schedule after persistent delays that cost Boeing billions of dollars.

"It took a lot of hard work to get to this day," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program, at the outset of two days of celebrations at the plane's Seattle production plant.

The blue and white-painted long-range aircraft, which boasts a graceful new design with raked wingtips, will leave for Japan on Tuesday and enter service domestically on October 26.

Boeing has taken orders for 821 Dreamliners, which will compete with the future Airbus A350, due in 2013.

The much-anticipated handover came a week after another major first delivery -- the 747-8 Freighter -- was abruptly postponed in a contract dispute with the customer. ANA, the world's ninth largest airline by revenues, plans to coax the airplane into service on domestic routes before putting it on longer international routes like Frankfurt, Germany.

The aircraft goes 52 percent further than the all-metal Boeing 767 which it is designed to replace while using 20 percent less fuel for the distance flown, an ANA executive said.

In a classic roll of the dice in the high-stakes aerospace industry, Boeing abandoned plans for a sound barrier-chasing "Sonic Cruiser" a decade ago and worked on lighter long-range jets as cash-starved airlines valued efficiency over speed.

The resulting composites-based technology proved popular with airlines, forcing Airbus to turn its back on the aluminum airframe for its next generation of jets. Boeing expects this to become the standard for future passenger planes.

"Technology will only get more efficient and lighter," said the 787 program's chief project engineer Mike Sinnett.

BUYER CONFIDENT ON RAMP-UP

The plane's lighter weight allows airlines to operate routes even when the demand is insufficient for larger aircraft like the Boeing 777 or 747, or the Airbus 380 superjumbo.

"For aviation we believe this is as important as the 707 was with the introduction of the jet age," Fancher said.

He moved to head off any fears over the new materials, stressing tough composites were nothing like ordinary plastic.

"Plastic is what you have on the dashboard of your car. This is not plastic," he told reporters.

The 787 development program has been delayed seven times due to challenges with engineering, supply chain glitches and a 58-day labor strike in 2008. [ID:nS1E78O09V]

"We have been waiting for the 787 for over 3 years as we expected it in the summer of 2008," said senior vice president Satoru Fujiki who took part in negotiations to buy the 787.

"I can't say the delayed delivery didn't have any impact but ANA and Boeing worked closely to mitigate it," he said, adding Boeing had provided alternative jets to meet the shortfall.

ANA has ordered a total of 55 Dreamliners worth $11 billion at current list prices, including 40 of the 260-passenger 787-8 variant being delivered this week. #

ANA plans to take delivery of 4 planes in 2011 and an additional 8 next year. "By the end of 2017 we will get all our 787's so it is catching up on all our deliveries."

The Seattle Times reported on Sunday that 787 program costs had topped $32 billion due to delays. That estimate raised questions, the newspaper said, over whether the new jet would make money for Boeing before "well into the 2020s, if ever."

Boeing declined comment.

Analysts say new jets typically cost closer to $15 billion.

Boeing also faces Wall Street concerns over its ability to reach its target of lifting output to 10 planes a month by 2013.

"Boeing still has to achieve a smooth production ramp-up and still has to do rework on some 40 airplanes that it says will take years to complete," aerospace analyst Scott Hamilton said.

Asked how confident he was that Boeing would stick to its latest output goals, ANA's Fujiki said: "We are quite confident in Boeing's ability to deliver on schedule this time."

Also uncertain is how many planes Boeing must sell to break even, something the company is not yet saying.

"If it is 1,200, they should make money; if it is larger than that it could be challenging," Hamilton said.

The delivery comes as Boeing remains locked in a dispute with one of its top labor unions in Washington state, where it has traditionally built its aircraft.

The International Association of Machinists and the National Labor Relations Board accuse Boeing of building a non-union 787 plant in South Carolina to punish the IAM for past strikes.

Boeing denies that claim, saying the jobs in South Carolina represent new employment, not the relocation of existing work. The issue has become a political lightning rod, with Republicans denouncing the Democratically controlled NLRB as being unfriendly to U.S. companies.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2011) ? In the future when you upgrade your computer, you may also be upgrading your wardrobe as researchers create novel new textiles that pull double-duty as fabrics and electronics.

The integration of electronics into textiles is a burgeoning field of research that may soon enable smart fabrics and wearable electronics. Bringing this technology one step closer to fruition, Jin-Woo Han and Meyya Meyyappan at the Center for Nanotechnology at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., have developed a new flexible memory fabric woven together from interlocking strands of copper and copper-oxide wires. At each juncture, or stitch along the fabric, a nanoscale dab of platinum is placed between the fibers. This "sandwich structure" at each crossing forms a resistive memory circuit. Resistive memory has received much attention due to the simplicity of its design.

As described in the AIP's journal AIP Advances, the copper-oxide fibers serve as the storage medium because they are able to change from an insulator to a conductor simply by applying a voltage. The copper wires and the platinum layers serve as the bottom and top electrodes, respectively. This design easily lends itself to textiles because it naturally forms a crossbar memory structure where the fibers intersect. The researchers developed a reversible, rewritable memory system that was able to retain information for more than 100 days.

In this proof-of-concept design, the copper wires were one millimeter thick, though smaller diameter wire would allow for an increase in memory density and a reduction in weight. In practical applications, e-textiles would need to integrate a battery or power generator, sensors, and a computational element, as well as a memory structure. Taken together, an e-textile could potentially detect biomarkers for various diseases, monitor vital signs of the elderly or individuals in hostile environments, and then transmit that information to doctors.

Palestinians prepare to submit UN statehood bid (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? Nearly two decades after embarking on historic peace talks with Israel, Palestinians prepared to sidestep that troubled route on Friday to seek U.N. recognition of an independent state ? hoping to leverage this dramatic move on the world stage to realize their dream of an independent homeland.

Earlier in the week, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas rebuffed an intense, U.S.-led effort to sway him from the statehood bid, saying he would submit the application to U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon as planned. A top aide, Mohammed Ishtayeh, said Thursday that Abbas asked Ban and the Council's Lebanese president this month to process the application without delay.

"We're going without any hesitation and continuing despite all the pressures," Abbas told members of the Palestinian diaspora at a hotel in New York on Thursday night. "We seek to achieve our right and we want our independent state."

To be sure, Abbas' appeal to the U.N. to recognize Palestinian independence in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip would not deliver any immediate changes on the ground: Israel would remain an occupying force in those first two territories and continue to severely restrict access to Gaza, ruled by Palestinian Hamas militants.

Beyond that, Security Council action on the membership request could take weeks or months.

The strategy also put the Palestinians in direct confrontation with the U.S., which has threatened to veto their membership bid in the U.N. Security Council, reasoning, like Israel, that statehood can only be achieved through direct negotiations between the parties to the long and bloody conflict.

Also hanging heavy in the air was the threat of renewed violence over frustrated Palestinian aspirations ? perhaps not immediate, because Abbas has vowed to prevent unrest, but possibly down the road if negotiations continue to stall.

Yet by seeking approval at a world forum overwhelmingly sympathetic to their quest, Palestinians hope to make it harder for Israel to resist already heavy global pressure to negotiate the borders of a future Palestine based on lines Israel held before capturing the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza in 1967.

In recent weeks, international mediators have been furiously trying to piece together a formula that would let the Palestinians abandon their plan to ask the Security Council for full U.N. membership, and instead make do with the more modest goal of asking a sympathetic General Assembly to elevate their status from permanent observer to nonmember observer state. The other part of that formula would include the resumption of negotiations in short order.

The U.S. and Israel have been pressuring council members to either vote against the plan or abstain when it comes up for a vote. The vote would require the support of nine of the council's 15 members to pass, but even if the Palestinians could line up that backing, a U.S. veto is assured.

The resumption of talks seems an elusive goal, with both sides digging in to positions that have tripped up negotiations for years. Israel insists that negotiations go ahead without any preconditions. But Palestinians say they will not return to the bargaining table without assurances that Israel would halt settlement building and drop its opposition to basing negotiations on the borders it held before capturing the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza in 1967.

Israel has warned that the Palestinian appeal to the U.N. will have a disastrous effect on negotiations, which have been the cornerstone of international Mideast policy for the past two decades. Netanyahu, who is to address the General Assembly later Friday, shortly after Abbas makes his own address, opposes negotiations based on 1967 lines, saying a return to those frontiers would expose Israel's heartland to rocket fire from the West Bank.

He also fears that if that principle becomes the baseline for negotiations, then Palestinians won't settle for anything less, despite previous understandings between the Palesitnians and previous Israeli governments to swap land where settlement blocs stand for Israeli territory.

Talks for all intents and purposes broke down nearly three years ago after Israel went to war in the Gaza Strip and prepared to hold national elections that ultimately propelled Netanyahu to power for a second time. A last round was launched a year ago, with the ambitious aim of producing a framework accord for a peace deal, but broke down just three weeks later after an Israeli settlement construction slowdown expired.

Palestinians say they turned to the U.N. in desperation over 18 failed years of peace talks. But Israelis say the Palestinians are to blame for their own predicament and accuse them of going to the United Nations precisely to avoid talks.

Google spurns Oracle $2.2 billion Android damage claim (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Google Inc urged a federal judge to reject an Oracle Corp expert's recommendation that it pay more than $2.2 billion for infringing on patents for Java technology used in the Android operating system.

U.S. District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco had on July 22 rejected Oracle's request for as much as $6.1 billion of damages, but gave the company a chance to revise its claim. A trial is scheduled to begin next month.

Oracle had sued Google in August 2010, claiming that the Internet search company's Android system infringed Java patents that Oracle acquired when it bought Sun Microsystems Inc seven months earlier. It also alleged copyright infringement.

The lawsuit is one of several among phone and software companies seeking a greater share of the profits in the growing market for smartphones and tablets.

In a Tuesday letter to the judge, Google lawyer Robert Van Nest said a new report by Oracle damages expert Iain Cockburn recommended damages of more than $2 billion for copyright infringement, and $201.8 million for patent infringement.

Van Nest said the September 12 report is deficient because Cockburn either speculated about or did not explain how he calculated damages, and failed to show much revenue Sun or Oracle might have earned by partnering with Google on Android.

The report "ignores governing law and the guidelines in this court's July 22, 2011 order," Van Nest concluded.

Google plans to ask Alsup to exclude portions of Cockburn's findings from the case. Cockburn is a Boston University management professor.

Oracle spokeswoman Deborah Hellinger declined to comment. Cockburn and Google did not immediately respond to requests on Wednesday for comment.

In the July 22 order, Alsup faulted Google for trying to downplay the value of Android, and use its earlier talks with Sun regarding a lower-cost Java license as a basis to limit Oracle's damages to a fraction of what it seeks.

But he scolded Cockburn for having "overreached" in an earlier report by assuming the entire value of Android was tied to Oracle's patents, rather than only parts alleged to infringe those patents. He urged that any revised report be more specific, and threatened to exclude it altogether if it "fails to measure up in any substantial and unseverable way."

Google is based in Mountain View, California, and Oracle in nearby Redwood City.

Kinsler has 2-run homer overturned on replay

SEATTLE - Texas second baseman Ian Kinsler's two-run homer in the third inning off Seattle ace Felix Hernandez has been overturned by video replay.

Behind in the count 1-2 Sunday, Kinsler hit a shot down the left-field line. It appeared to be foul, but third base umpire Brian Gorman ruled it a fair ball. Kinsler didn't even start his home run trot until after Gorman pointed that the ball was fair.

Seattle manager Eric Wedge immediately ran out to argue. Gorman, the crew chief, wasn't in the video room for long before returning and declaring the ball foul.

Kinsler then grounded into an inning-ending double play on the next pitch.
