Report: Facebook in talks to buy browser-maker Opera

A new report indicates that Facebook, fresh off its initial public offering, is in talks to acquire Web browser maker Opera Software.

Tech blog Pocket-lint, citing unnamed "trusted sources," reported that the social media giant is looking to buy Oslo, Norway-based Opera to expand into the browser space. In doing so, Facebook would be facing competition from the likes of Google, Microsoft, Mozilla, Apple ? and even Yahoo, which just this week launched its own Axis browser.

A spokeswoman for Facebook declined to comment about the rumor when contacted by PCMag on Friday. Opera also declined to comment.

"As a standard policy Opera does not respond to market rumors and we have no comment to the rumor addressed in the question," the company said in a statement.

However, The Next Web reported that a "source close to Opera" claims the browser maker is currently in the midst of a hiring freeze, and its management is talking to potential buyers. The company's leadership is reportedly considering becoming part of a larger privately held or public company, instead of trying to keep growing the business on its own.

Opera, which makes browsers for desktops, tablets, and smartphones, is currently listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange. The company says that about 270 million people use its browsers every month.

Facebook, meanwhile, last month bought the photo-sharing service Instagram for $1 billion. The social network also recently picked up the developers of the Lightbox Android photo app, along with 750 patents from IBM.

Yemen: US drone strike kills 5 militants

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? A U.S. drone strike Monday aiming for an al-Qaida leader has killed five militants in the country's south as part of a Yemeni offensive against the Islamist group, Yemeni officials said.

They said the airstrike targeted Qaid al-Dahab, a local leader of al-Qaida, in a convoy of three cars near the town of Radda, 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of the capital, Sanaa. Four militants were wounded. The officials said al-Dahab's fate was not yet known.

Al-Dahab's sister was the wife of Anwar al-Awlaki, the U.S.-born radical militant cleric killed by a U.S. drone strike last fall.

There was no immediate word from Washington on the strike that targeted al-Dahab.

On Sunday, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta defended drone strikes in Yemen as a measure "to defend and protect the United States of America." He was interviewed by the American ABC TV network.

Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen, known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, is one of the movement's most dangerous offshoots. The U.S. considers the impoverished country as a key battleground in the war against al-Qaida.

The terror network has had a presence in Yemen for years, but expanded its influence during last year's political upheaval when millions of Yemenis rallied across the country demanding the ouster of their longtime ruler, Ali Abdullah Saleh. The militant group seized control of several towns in the south during the turmoil.

Earlier this year, al-Dahab's brother, Tariq, led militants who stormed and briefly occupied Radda, They pulled out after authorities released 15 of his men from jail. Tariq was later killed in a family feud.

Later Monday, Yemen officials said seven other al-Qaida militants were killed in southern Yemen, but they disagreed over how they died. Security officials said they were killed in an airstrike, but the military said they were hit by a missile fired from a ship off Yemen's shore. Local tribal officials said the seven militants were in two cars.

Yemen's army is pushing an offensive to uproot al-Qaida-linked militants from their strongholds in the south. The U.S. is aiding the operations. Panetta said its activities "don't necessarily involve boots on the ground," according to a transcript of the interview on the ABC website.

In their offensive, Yemeni government troops have retaken most of a southern provincial capital from al-Qaida fighters.

The officials said Monday that the army holds 90 percent of Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan province, which fell to al-Qaida last year. They say 48 hours of fierce fighting left 22 militants and nine soldiers dead.

They said the army was advancing toward Jaar, another town in militant hands for over a year, in a three-pronged attack supported by heavy artillery shelling and air raids.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations.

Workers at Pilgrim nuclear plant in Plymouth to vote on new union contract

Members of the company that runs a Plymouth nuclear plant and the union representing some of its workers agreed Saturday to present a four-year pay and benefits package to union members for a vote, officials said.

The vote is expected to occur next Saturday, according to a statement from Entergy Corp., which owns the nuclear plant. The proposed contract would apply to approximately 240 of the plant?s 650 workers, said Rob Williams, Entergy Corp. spokesman.

The two sides also agreed to keep the current contract in effect until midnight on June 5.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced Friday it had decided to extend the plant?s license e nuclear plant to produce energy for another 20 years.

Two bits of bad news to dampen any cheer earlier reports might have warranted. It is accompanied by one bit of good news. The bad news comes from Alabama and Iowa. The good news comes from Arizona, a state normally known as a bellwether for bad news.

Early in Alabama's 2012 legislative session it appeared that the legislature would correct some of the most egregious aspects of the legislation passed in 2011 to control the state's unwanted immigrant population. Among the revisions considered was the one that required schools to verify the citizenship of each student enrolled in school. Another was the one that required officers who stopped anyone to check on the citizenship of the person irrespective of whether that person was issued a citation or arrested. Sadly, the law signed by Alabama's governor earlier this month retains the requirement that schools check on the citizenship of their students. As a result, on the first day of school teachers will ask all students who are illegal immigrants to raise their hands. The new law also retained the provision that police could check the citizenship status of anyone they stopped irrespective of whether a citation was issued or an arrest made. So much for Alabama.

Arizona, too, is back in the news, but by the skin of its teeth, the news is good. Arizona's House Bill 2177 was passed by the Arizona legislature in 2011. Known as the birther bill, it required that for a presidential candidate's name to appear on the Arizona ballot the candidate would have to prove that he or she was a natural-born U.S. citizen. Under the bill each candidate was required to present an affidavit stating his or her age and citizenship, present a long-form birth certificate and, for good measure, a statement describing where the candidate has lived for 14 years. Absent a long-form birth certificate, the statutory requirement was permitted to be fulfilled by a candidate presenting an "early baptismal or circumcision certificate." (It is not clear if instead of a circumcision certificate the candidate, if a male, would have been permitted to simply present the appropriate appendage to the certifying authority that could by visual inspection determine whether or not the procedure had been performed. In all events, it turned out that it doesn't matter.)

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, who has been willing to sign lots of whacky legislation, drew the line at this one. In vetoing the bill, she said she couldn't imagine requiring candidates for the highest office in the land to present "early baptismal or circumcision certificates. ... This measure creates significant new problems while failing to do anything constructive for Arizona." Some thought that would put that particular measure to rest. Some were wrong.

On May 18, 2012, Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett said that before permitting Barack Obama's name to appear on the ballot as a presidential candidate, he wants proof of the president's birthplace. In a statement released to the press he disclaimed any hint of nuttiness. He said:

"First, I have been on the record since 2009 that I believe the president was born in Hawaii. I am not a birther. At the request of a constituent, I asked the state of Hawaii for a verification in lieu of a certified copy. We're merely asking them to officially confirm they have the president's birth certificate in their possession and are awaiting their response."

Mr. Bennett may have wanted this because Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced at a news conference on March 1, 2012 that an investigation under his supervision had determined that the birth certificate released by the White House was a "computer-generated forgery." (Mr. Arpaio has just been indicted by the Justice Department for a variety of alleged criminal activities, but that is no reason to doubt the quality of his investigation into the authenticity of Mr. Obama's birth certificate.) The good news is that Hawaii has now confirmed to Mr. Bennett's satisfaction that Mr. Obama was born in Hawaii. That is cause for celebration among almost all who have questioned it up until now. Among those neither celebrating nor convinced are Republicans in Iowa.

Iowa is best remembered (aside from the fact that it put Rick Santorum in first place in its recent primary) when in 2010 voters threw out three Supreme Court Justices who had joined in a unanimous decision that legalized same sex marriage in Iowa. On May 21, 2012, the chairman of the Iowa GOP platform committee told a waiting world that the committee decided to include a plank in its platform affirming its belief that "candidates for president ... must show proof of being a 'natural-born citizen' as required by ... the Constitution." As this is written it is not known if the platform committee will reconsider, given Arizona's news. Probably not. It would spoil a birther's day to be influenced by facts.

If we believe Japan's Nikkei, the decision by Hon Hai Precision Industry (that is, Foxconn's daddy) to buy a stake in Sharp was really just the start of a long, torrid love affair in LCD production. While Hon Hai is getting the rosy side of the deal for Sharp's TV-oriented Sakai plant, it's now thought to be paying Sharp for display technology that would go into a new factory in Chengdu for small- and medium-sized LCDs used for smartphones and tablets. If all dovetails as nicely as the two would like, the joint venture would see advanced mobile displays manufactured on the cheap -- the best of both worlds. Suffice it to say that there's a few companies that might be interested, as clients like Apple are no strangers to Chengdu. Before you let visions of IGZO-based LCDs on every iPad and iPhone dance through your head, though, remember that neither Hon Hai nor Sharp has confirmed anything -- and that the plant wouldn't be up and running until 2013 at the earliest, even if everything's in sync.

Robot smart enough to clean your room (but not to have excuse to get out of it)

There?s a robot for just about every thankless household chore ? one scoops poop, another folds towels, there?s even one that pours beer. Now, thankfully, there?s a robot that tidies up a messy room.

The room-cleaning task is more difficult than it sounds even for humans, which is why we?re more apt to pour ourselves a cold brew than, say, clean up the kitchen after dinner.

To be a good housecleaner, the robot needs to be able to scan its surroundings, identify objects, figure out where they go and then put them in their rightful place. It?s a mentally taxing chore that the robot accomplishes with computer algorithms.

The algorithms allow the robot to consider the nature of an object as it decides what to do with it, explains Cornell University, where the robot was?built and tested.

?It learns not to put a shoe in the refrigerator,? Yun Jiang, a graduate student in computer science and member of the research team, said in a news release.?

Like anyone tasked to clean an unfamiliar room the first time, the robot isn?t perfect. There?s a learning curve ? it improves as it repeats the task and gets familiar with its surroundings.

Still, though, the robot is pretty good from the get go. It was 80 percent accurate the first time it put away dishes, books, clothing and toys. It improved to 98 percent accuracy.

Cornell explains how it works:

The robot begins by surveying the room with a Microsoft Kinect 3-D camera, originally made for video gaming but now being widely used by robotics researchers. Many images are stitched together to create an overall view of the room, which the robot?s computer divides into blocks based on discontinuities of color and shape.

The robot has been shown several examples of each kind of object and learns what characteristics they have in common. For each block it computes the probability of a match with each object in its database and chooses the most likely match.

For each object the robot then examines the target area to decide on an appropriate and stable placement. Again it divides a 3-D image of the target space into small chunks and computes a series of features of each chunk, taking into account the shape of the object it?s placing.

The researchers train the robot for this task by feeding it graphic simulations in which placement sites are labeled as good and bad, and it builds a model of what good placement sites have in common. It chooses the chunk of space with the closest fit to that model.

Finally the robot creates a graphic simulation of how to move the object to its final location and carries out those movements.

Often times we hear business, marketing and life gurus tell us that planning and goal setting are the key to creating a successful life. They tell us also to visualize and have vision. That is all well and good. But it is about time someone told us exactly how to exactly set those goals so that our results are exact. And it does not stop there. How do you visualize and think after that? Your goals and visions, in the presence of right thinking and certainty, are the prophecies of what you shall one day become. You are in luck, for this article goes exactly there. It takes you into the ultimate in goal setting and visualization. Here is a most effective technique.

Let us start with the goals and visualization then move on to thinking. These are the goal setting steps to follow. These steps are the same whether you are doing it for your business or for life. In fact, try not to separate your life. Life is a whole, and it works out that way. Separation only exists in the mind at the level of the ego. Make life goals that include your business and marketing. Do not make business goals only by themselves on the side and forget life goals as this will actually short-circuit the business goals. Everything works together as a system. So here we go:

1. List what you would like to have, do and be between now and the next 30 years. List everything you can think of, small and large. Places to visit, things to have, residences, experiences, partners, skills to acquire, things to do, people to meet, projects, charities, health, habits ? everything! This is not a list of what you think you can achieve. It is a list of what would give you the most incredible life of you liking, whether you think you can achieve it or not. A life that is unbelievably fantastic for you. Your list should have at least 100 things in there ? it is not hard to come up with at least 100 things for 30 years. To be very wealthy, have about 5,000 things ? even small details regarding your desires should be in there.

2. For each goal you listed, write the reasons why you wish to have it. If for example you wish to have a large home, write down the reasons why. In other words, what will you do with and in this home? Put drama into it. Reasons empower your goal and make it easier to imagine and visualize and attain it. They give life to it and make the subconscious accept it a whole lot better.

3. Get cuttings from magazines, brochures, the Internet, photographs, etc, of the items in your goals and stick them in your journal. Start a goals and visualizations journal on paper or computer. In it, place pictures of the things you wish to have ? cars, stocks, buildings, boats, land, travel, clothes, or anything else. Refer to it often ? twice a day is highly recommended. The more real and detailed your visualization and imagination is, the faster and more accurately you will realize your goals. Pictures are very important to have in your life.

4. Everyday, read your list, look at your pictures, and then spend at least 20 minutes twice a day imagining, animating, and visualizing in detail all your goals. If you meditate, and it is highly recommended that you do your goal visualization, do your goals visualization in meditation as well. Meditation puts you closest to The Source, the best place you can be to plant your seed of visions into the field of infinite possibilities and creation.

5. Then, Here, Now, do something that takes you closer to your goal. There is always something to do now, however small. It will open the next step to you, a step that may be unseen until that first act is taken. Every act is an act of self-definition and creation. Act deliberately and with awareness so that each act takes you closer to your goals, not further. Act with purpose.

6. Do everything with gratitude. Think, speak and act with gratitude, the gratitude of knowing you are guaranteed success if you act in the ways of these laws. Gratitude is a statement of certainty. That is power. Be genuinely grateful and excited about the fact that you already have your goals realized, for they will be by universal law, guaranteed, and so they are. This type of gratitude works wonders.

7. Enjoy your fruits, enjoy experiencing your goals when they manifest into your reality! They are sure to do so, guaranteed by universal law. The reason they are guaranteed is that every moment of your life is created by your mind (and in a lesser extent the collective minds of people around you). Your life is images of your mind, expressed, translated and crystallized into form. You are literally the source of your life, although it may not appear so especially if you are not present and aware of your daily thoughts, worries, desires and beliefs. Most people are unconscious and engulfed in their mind in one huge day dream. Wake up and watch yourself!

?I Am?.? ?I Am?.? No matter what you are trying to create next in your life, find a way of putting it into ?I Am?. For example if you wish to loose weight, do not think or say ?I will loose 10 pounds ?or ?I want to loose 10 pounds?. Instead say, think and write ?I am x pounds now?. Do the same with wealth. The only time that exists in the universe, scientifically and spiritually, is Now. Hence ?I Am?.

Do not worry how your goals will be fulfilled. There are powerful forces at work in all of nature, with infinite intelligence and coordination. Things, people, books, places, TV shows, movies, etc, will start appearing and helping you to achieve your goals. In other words, ?coincidences? will happen. Simply visualize your goals believingly.

The trick is in the details and in consistency. For example, if having a new home is a goal you have, write it down in detail. Write down where the house is located, how many rooms it has, the size of the compound, the size of the home, the furnishings in it, and so on. Then visualize it that way. And do not change your mind ? this is very important. Understand that the universe is in activity manifesting into physical form all your thoughts. Every single one of them turns into some amount of physical form somehow and somewhere. If you change your mind, you will be undoing your work. Just hold your thought until it become fully physical.

You are almost done. All that is left now is to know a little bit about creation and thinking, so that you maintain your vigilance and confidence.

All thought has an effect. Therefore, imaging your life exactly as you wish it to be and be it. Become it. Do not let another thought ever come in that contradicts or weakens that vision. If you notice one coming in, immediately block it, change it for a positive one, and declare that you shall never let yourself think something like that again. This is the ultimate in positive thinking. It is focused and filtered. Do the same with your words and actions. Never let anything you say or do go against your vision, your highest wished for life. This is because life is created through thought, word and action, and therefore you must guard all three. Do not stress over this. It may take effort at first but it will soon become normal to you. And if you are in a ?bad? spot, remember that all conditions are temporary, as is the nature of everything in the universe. Conditions do not define you, for you are beyond them. In fact, only you can determine how long you remain in a ?bad? spot by the way you handle that situation in terms of your thoughts, words and actions.

The final thing is to be present. Stop day dreaming all the time. Be present, be here, Now. It is the only time that exists, the only place you can be, the only place where life is. And it is the only place where you can do anything anyway. Be grateful for the present moment, as it resolves itself always at your command, and for that be grateful or else you miss its fruits and ?lessons?. Stop chasing your dreams in your mind, for such a place is a phantom world that does not exist. Instead, call them forth into your present moment, Now.

That is about it! A mouthful but that should get you going very well indeed! Be present, be vigilant, be certain, and be clear.

There is a popular food movement out there called Eat This, Not That. I have seen the writers on morning talk shows haul out a giant platter of cheese fries and exclaim, ?don?t eat this!? and then they reveal this super yummy looking alternative and triumphantly say, ?eat that!?

I realized this week that this thinking applies to the comments and remarks that we make to each other. It?s a celebration and naturally we want to give someone a four layer chocolate slab of cake, but really that slab isn?t always going to be so well received. What might be better would be a super perfectly sized chocolate cupcake.

More to the point ? there are life situations that we all wade through and sometimes people say the WRONG thing when they just don?t know any better. Unless we have been there, done that, chances are we have no idea what to say to comfort someone going through tough times.

I started to compile a list of life situations and what is OK to say and what is NOT OK to say to someone. There are gaps for you to help me fill. This is your chance to put out there what someone said to you that helped you through. Music Notes: Somers Point Beach Concerts, Jazz at Atlantic Club ...

Music fans will have more options than ever to catch a concert in Atlantic City this Memorial Day weekend, but that's not when the music stops. The entire southern Jersey shore region will popping with music of all kinds this summer ? including rockabilly, jazz, classcial, rock, blues, R&B and reggae.

This year, the Atlantic City region has a full slate of top-tier concerts, from Beyonc? and Metallica to Phish, Yes, J Lo, and James Taylor.

With the June 1-3 Atlantic City Multi-Cultural Festival, the Atlantic City concert series at Gardner's Basin, the International Series at Kennedy Plaza (presented by the Atlantic City Free Public Library) and the Somers Point Beach Concerts series (celebrating its 20th year) music lovers will have many opportunities to chill out and listen to free concerts this summer.

The five-show series, co-sponsored by the City of Atlantic City and Atlantic City Free Public Library, kicks off on Saturday, June 2. Opening acts begin at 1pm and headliners start at 4pm and play until dusk. The concerts are free and open to the public.

Miley Cyrus is giving sex advice to girls and parents across America.

Following the controversy over wearing a ?pantless? outfit, Miley Cyrus announced to reporters that she is working on a book (and workshops) about sex.

?At this point, I?m an expert on the topic,? Miley reportedly told WWN. ?I believe sex is the most important aspect to life, and I want everyone to enjoy it as much as I do.?

The 19-year-old said: ?The girls that really base how much they?re worth on the sexual favors they can do for somebody, that makes me really sad. Because sex is actually really beautiful.?

The singer and actress claima that not talking about sex could lead to youngsters approaching it wrongly.

So, what is Miley?s advice?

?She?ll be realizing a book and DVDs soon,? said her manager. ??And she?ll be on Dr. Phil, Ellen and in a private interview with Oprah to discuss, but we can give you the four basic points.?

1) ?IT?S BEAUTIFUL. ? Sex is beautiful and if you are beautiful or think you?re beautiful and then you find someone who you think is beautiful and you take your clothes off and just get beautiful with each other, well then it?s all just so beautiful. ?Be beautiful, baby.

2) IT?S MAGICAL. ?It takes you to another world. ? Girls should allow themselves to fantasize and dream when you are with your guy. ?You?ll feel like you are in heaven, but maybe you have other fantasies. ?Maybe you?re a unicorn and he?s a flying lion? ?Maybe you?re seeing stars and fireworks, but let yourself see rainbows and lollipops and? me. ?That?ll be cool for you.

3) IT?S BONDING. ?You can?t just connect with your body. ?You have to connect with your mind too. ?The best sex is when two people connect with their brains, with their minds. ?So, try to get into his brain, before you get into his pants. ?Maybe do some crossword puzzles together or play word-association games. ?That will make the sex that much better.
