Save Our Schools March Calls For Teacher-Backed Reform

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama was swept into office amid calls for change in the country on issues ranging from the economy to education. Almost three years after his election, those who enthusiastically supported his candidacy are calling for him to fulfill his campaign promises and bring United States public education into the 21st century.

On Saturday the Save Our Schools march took place in Washington, D.C., at the Ellipse just south of the White House. The purpose of the event was to get federal officials to listen to teachers, parents and students -- the people who are closest to the education process.

Speakers included former Assistant Secretary of Education Diane Ravitch, Academy Award-winning actor Matt Damon and Damon's mother, Nancy Carlson Paige, a former Massachusetts public school teacher.

"We need to give students a sense of hope," Ravitch told The Huffington Post. When asked for specific policy proposals Ravitch said, "We need to stop high-stakes testing and we need more funding for early childhood education."

About 4000 people were in attendance and came from all over the country to bring to the light the current state of United States public education.

Kelly Hiegl, a public school teacher from Milwaukee, came to protest the budget cuts in Wisconsin.

"We're losing specialists in classes, we're being laid off -- the detriment is going to be tremendous," Hiegl told The Huffington Post. "We need collective bargaining back, we need to be able negotiate and we need funding so urban and suburban students have equal opportunity."

Nancy Cox, a school board member and former teacher from Durham, N.C., decried the emphasis put on standardized testing: "I have proctored the end of graduation test and I have seen men cry knowing they can't pass. Children have fallen asleep taking the test," she told The Huffington Post. "We need to scrap 'No Child Left Behind' and start over."

Jeff Dailey, a public school teacher from Delaware, had similar concerns over the current state of public education. "I've been around long enough that I know what public education was like in the 60's and 70's," Dailey told The Huffington Post. "We have no need for private and charter schools. We used to have qualified teachers who had support from the public education system and the emphasis was on team building. Now students are tested to death. Education is about growing, not testing."

There was particular anger at the event towards Arne Duncan, current Secretary of Education. There were many signs featuring the words, "Arne Sucks" and "Children are more important than test scores" -- a reference to Duncan's emphasis on standardized tests. The secretary has been a controversial figure for teachers as he is a proponent of merit pay proposals based on test scores and the march came only a few days after Secretary Duncan defended current education funding

The event drew upon the A-List star power of Academy Award winning Actor Matt Damon to make its point.

"I wept when Barack Obama was elected president, but this isn't the type of history I thought he'd make, Damon told The Huffington Post. "Funding is driven based on test scores. That puts all the focus on the test scores. So if you're a teacher in the classroom, you don't spend any time getting your kids excited about learning -- your job depends on how well the kid does on a test, so now you're just drilling and trying to get them ready for the test."

There is undeniable anger and frustration from educators across the country toward President Obama and Secretary Duncan. However, it is unclear if "Save Our Schools" is meant to represent the beginning of a movement or a one time event.

If Diane Ratvich has her way, this is just the beginning: "Free public education, open to all, with no lottery, is a cornerstone of our democracy," she said.

Tamoxifen Wards Off Breast Cancer's Return for More Than a Decade (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, July 28 (HealthDay News) -- Women who took the cancer-suppressing drug tamoxifen for five years after a breast cancer diagnosis were nearly 40 percent less likely to have the cancer return, and that protection lasted for more than a decade after they stopped taking the drug, a new study finds.

Researchers analyzed the results of about 20 randomized controlled trials on a five-year course of tamoxifen vs. not taking the drug. The trials involved 21,000 women from a dozen countries around the world, including the United States, Europe, China and Japan.

Some 15 years after their diagnosis -- and 10 years after they stopped taking the drug -- women who took tamoxifen still had one-third lower risk of dying than women who didn't take it.

"It's a remarkable drug," said study author Dr. Christina Davies, a lead investigator with the Early Breast Cancer Trialists Collaborative Group, which was established some 25 years ago to conduct periodic reviews of research on breast cancer from around the world. "It has probably saved more lives than any other oncological drug ever."

Of 10,645 women who took tamoxifen, about 26 percent had a relapse at the 10-year-mark, compared to 40 percent who didn't take the medication. By 15 years, 33 percent of women who took the drug had their cancer return, compared to 46 percent who didn't.

The statistics were similar when it came to death rates. After a decade, about 25 percent of women who didn't take the drug had died compared to 18 percent of those who did take it; at 15 years, 33 percent who didn't take the drug died compared to 24 percent of those who took tamoxifen.

"They not only gained the benefits while they were taking the drug, but for many years afterward," Davies said.

The study is published in the July 28 online issue of The Lancet.

Tamoxifen has been widely used for more than 30 years to treat the most common type of breast cancer, estrogen-receptor positive tumors.

The drug works by inhibiting the activity of estrogen, a female hormone that can drive the growth of breast cancer tumors. The drug is most often prescribed as a once-a-day pill for younger women with breast cancer.

Older, postmenopausal women are now often prescribed a newer class of drugs called aromatase inhibitors, which block estrogen released in body fat, experts said. Aromatase inhibitors are most easily used in women who no longer have ovaries that are producing estrogen, Davies said.

One reason for the switch to aromatase inhibitors: Prior research, as well as the current study, found that tamoxifen raises the risk of cancer of the lining of the uterus (endometrial cancer) and life-threatening blood clots in the lungs. The analysis found the added risk from tamoxifen to older women was small, and in younger women it was "almost non-existent," Davies said.

"The benefits greatly outweigh the risks," Davies said.

Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, said studies such as this that look at death rates over the long-term are valuable.

"The study shows that tamoxifen as an adjuvant [additional] therapy for breast cancer has had a very successful track record that has been sustained over 30 years of use in the clinic, even though it's used less now," he said.

The analysis found tamoxifen worked equally well in women who underwent chemotherapy and radiation in addition to surgery, Davies noted. Another benefit: tamoxifen is inexpensive. Davies estimated a five-year course of the drug costs about $150, of particular importance in developing nations where breast cancer rates have risen dramatically, she said.

Many of the women in the analysis, she noted, failed to take the full five-year course of the drug, so it's possible the protective effect from fully taking the medication as prescribed might be even greater. The findings raise the question of whether, say, a 10-year course of tamoxifen might be even more beneficial than five years.

About half of the women worldwide diagnosed with breast cancer are pre-menopausal, she said. "For those women, tamoxifen is the main treatment option," she said.

About two-thirds of breast cancers in the United States are estrogen-positive. The drug worked even on those whose tumors are "weakly positive," she noted.

The Greatest Tasting Wedding Cakes In Fort Worth | AutoRoll ...

Your wedding cake is the middle piece at your party and is captured in a great deal of your wedding photos. You truly have never ending selections when it comes to the actual design and essence of your cake. Whereas the conventional wedding cake is round and three-tiered, countless young couples are now opting for something more pleasurable and outrageous. I didn?t realize how complicated and cool a cake can be until a recent wedding I attended. The cake appeared like a swatch from a lifelike 1960?s floral drape, the roses appeared to bloom right before your eyes. I was wordless by the inventiveness and details that had gone into it. Here are a few strategies on how to search out a distinctive, unforgettable wedding cake of your own.

Some vital questions to ask yourself: How do I choose a excellent wedding cake baker? How do I settle on the taste, filling and icing of my wedding cake? How do I pick out my wedding cake design?

There?s simply no better technique of knowing whether a baker can make a delicious and superb wedding cake than to talk to someone who has decided to buy one. Try to imagine a wedding you?ve been to in the past where they had a wedding cake that you loved and ask the couple if they commend the baker. You can also ask your other wedding vendors, such as your wedding caterer, wedding venue, or wedding planner, if you have one. Austin has many top quality bakeries to pick from.

Once you?ve narrowed down a list of possible bakers, call the shop to schedule an appointment. You certainly would like to get the baker?s exclusive attention (something you really want and need in an effort to talk about plans for the wedding cake). Imagine this as an interview. Request to see pictures of earlier work, especially cakes that are like to what you have in mind. If you are not comfortable and sure that he or she can create what you?re looking for, move on to the next.

Once upon a time, a wedding cake was white inside and outside, but at present there are many features for decorations and consumption. Everything from chocolate mouse to hazelnut praline along with apricot. At my nieces recent wedding, she selected a lemon blackberry cake plus a buttercream frosting that was to die for! She was a little panicky in her selection of wedding cake, but it turned out to be a real hit, and was one of the most fantastic wedding cakes I?ve ever witnessed, with a cream highlighted frosting, deep rich purple trim and layered with real blackberries, flowers and edible pearls scattered on each level.

The single thing I might steer away from are liquor flavored wedding cakes if you plan on having a lot of kids as guests at your wedding. Other than that, allow your imagination run wild! Ask the baker you?ve selected if he or she has any specialty flavors also do a lot of sampling until you think you?ve found the ideal taste of wedding cake. You can even include several different flavors on each tier of the cake, leaving something for every person.

The wedding cake you conceive can really develop into a piece of art. Do you want to have a traditional wedding cake, or something more unique and imaginative? Whatever the shape of wedding cake you go with, the design of your cake can be as minimal as smooth icing with clusters of flowers or as obscure as replicating the lace that is covering your gown.

My personal favorite in making a unique wedding cake is the cake topper! Back in the day your only selection in a cake topper was a perky, plastic newlywed couple, but nowadays there are an extraordinary array of other possibilities. Select something that displays who you and the groom-to-be are as individuals to make your wedding cake that much more unforgettable.

Virgin Media testing 1.5Gbps internet for lucky Londonites

Virgin Media
Jealous of Comcast customers with their 105Mbps cable hook ups or those lucky residents of the Kansas cities relishing in Google's 1Gbps service? Well add Londonites to the list of people that drive you to indulging in one of the seven deadly sins. Virgin Media has finally started testing its DOCSIS2-powered 1.5Gbps network in the heart of merry ol' England. Right now it's being enjoyed by a group of test sites around Old Street that also get a 150Mbps upload connection. Virgin claims it's the fastest broadband in the world, which may be true if you're not counting lab experiments. The really good news is that it's based on the same tech already delivering 100Mbps to residents across the country so, if the trial goes well, it should be trivial to deliver these mind numbing speeds to the rest of its customers. PR after the break.
